Almost three years have passed since the last edition of the Havana World Music Festival (HWM). In March 2020, just five days before the party started, the imminent passage of Covid 19 through Cuba imposed a pause on us that lasted much longer than expected. Now, when the world is gradually recovering its natural rhythm, we mark the starting date on our calendar again.

From May 26 to 28, 2022, Havana will vibrate with world music, in a special edition of the Festival: HWM Reload. We return to our roots, in the spirit of celebrating resilience and the ability of music to accompany and protect us. We return to the José Antonio Echeverría park, the initial headquarters of the project, led by the performer and composer Eme Alfonso, and we also announce another call for “Primera Base” (First Base in English), the contest for new musical proposals that promote young talent on the Island.

“Being able to hold the Festival, finally, is an immense personal and professional gratification. It is the starting point to continue carrying out exchange projects open to the world and show the public the cultural diversity, inside and outside of Cuba. We have always characterized ourselves by defending a more alternative side of music and, given the need to be in communication during this pandemic, we are now more connected with incredible artists who will perform in this and other editions.

“We are going to recharge ourselves with good energy to face everything. Despite all the adversities, we have music to ease burdens and enjoy the best moments in life”, assures Eme Alfonso, who launched HWM in 2014.

As usual, the largest alternative event in the Caribbean proposes three days with concerts by local and international artists and various collateral activities, in addition to the presentations of the winners of the First Base Contest in 2020 and 2021. The call for this contest, which is held annually, is open from today and will run until April 28 next. To learn more about Primera Base, the selection criteria and how to apply, applicants can go to the official HWM website:

Under the auspices of the Center for Recordings and Musical Editions (EGREM), and the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Cuban Institute of Music, the Havana World Music Festival has achieved in its six previous editions a call for more than 60,000 participants and 130 artists, from approximately 40 countries.
